During the month of May our 4th grade team held an Arts Materials Drive for Windover Arts. This was a student-led project where students brainstormed and voted on title, slogan and prizes, made posters, wrote short speeches, classified materials, and measured and compared class data on graphs. It was a huge success because we were able to collect over 400 items, which will allow more kids to go to art camp this summer. Thanks to all the families who donated!

Nicole has! She was given a warm fuzzy by Mrs. Randall. "I helped her with her first recess duty. I told her what to do if someone needs to use the bathroom when we are out on the playground," stated Nicole Mrs. Randall heavily relied on the expertise of students familiar with playground procedures like where and when to gather students when recess was over. Nicole helped at the door to let students in. "I was happy and surprised. I didn't think I would get a warm fuzzy for that." Nicole quickly gave that same warm fuzzy to another student for complimenting her because it made her feel good.
Kathryn has earned a warm fuzzy! She received hers from Mrs. Felice for being one of only three students to come to see her to practice long division. When asked how she felt when Mrs. Felice handed her the pom-pom she stated, "I felt warm. I felt like I filled her bucket." Later that day, Kathryn gave that same warm fuzzy to a classmate who offered to be her lunch partner when no one else would. "She thanked me for giving her a warm fuzzy. I felt warm again, like people like me." Fourth grade students at Weatherbee School have been reading nonfiction and researching extreme weather. Students have learned to use text features and structures to help them find and take notes as part of a research team. Using Lucy Calkins reading curriculum as a teaching resource, I have guided students who will share their learning by writing presentations to teach themselves and others. On Friday, February 26th, students welcomed, Todd Simcox, channel 5 meteorologist, to share his knowledge and expertise in the area of weather and forecasting. Students were able to learn about the training, tools and responsibilities of a meteorologist. Students were able to ask prepared questions about their weather topic to help enhance their research. As a celebration of our learning, computer teacher, Sue Oberholtzer, will assist in recording students presentations about their weather events using a "green screen" similar to the technology Todd Simcox shared he uses during broadcasting. Students will have the opportunity to add images of their event to the iMovie program that will bring their presentations to life. Excitedly, Mrs. Randall Students from the upstairs and downstairs teams collaborated together to build a structure to withstand an earthquake. For the challenge, teams were asked to create a 12 inch structure using given amounts of toothpicks, straws, dry spaghetti, mini marshmallows, gumdrops, twist ties and yarn. Once they built their structures, they tested it by giggling it on top of a pan of jello. Teams were able revise and rebuild after each test to make it stronger.
Our writing celebration held on Friday, Jan. 8th was a success! We'd like to to thank everyone who was able to attend. The kids loved reading the comments left by the many adults who read their essays.
Flat Stanley has been traveling throughout the United States and abroad! The students have been sooooo excited to share their photos and letters from loved ones. This project will continue all year! The letters and photos from the region we are currently studying will be posted on our classroom bulletin board. As you can see above, we are studying the Northeast and Southeast regions. I'm always so impressed with the time and effort family members and friends put into this project. Thank you everyone!!

For our informational unit we invited staff members from around the building to read our books. Each student was given feedback about their informational writing.
On Friday, January 16th, students shared their opinion writing with parents and other peers. They were thrilled with the amount of comments they received from everyone. Thank you for making it such a success!
